6 sustainable swaps to save on gift-giving and travel

We’ve partnered with Allianz to develop some tips to help Australians introduce more sustainable practices when it comes to gift-giving and travelling. If you enjoy giving gifts and love to travel, the following strategies may help you find ways to reduce your footprint and help you be more conscious of the decisions you make.

Sustainable swaps for gift-giving

1. Shop at a local business instead of online shopping

Online shopping has its advantages of being convenient and handy when you need something delivered quickly, however, the carbon emissions and waste associated can build overtime. Instead of shopping online, you could support a local business and buy gifts at a small business while also showing your support within the community.

2. Choose experiences over material gifts

Gifting an experience could be more meaningful to a loved one than a material gift. They can make memories instead. Whether that’s a shared activity you do between yourselves or booking a class to learn a new skill, experience-related gifts provide opportunities where you can make memories and spend quality time with your loved one.

Sustainable swaps for travel

1. Book a staycation instead of a long trip

A staycation is the perfect way to disconnect and recharge. By being a tourist in your own city, you could save on emissions by travelling locally instead.

2. Consider staying in sustainable accommodation

Depending on your budget and preferences, you might want to consider staying in sustainable accommodation. By choosing an eco-friendly stay, you could reduce your carbon footprint as generally they would be reducing electricity and water usage. You’ll also be supporting the local community and provide employment opportunities.

3. Take public transport instead of driving and ride-sharing services

Taking public transport would reduce road congestion and your carbon footprint. Make the most of public transport such as the bus, train or ferry to get to your destination as these modes of transport are cost-efficient and reliable. By reducing your reliance on driving and ride-sharing services, you could also decrease your travel expenses.

4. Choose a meat-free dish when dining out

When eating out, be conscious about what food you decide to consume. Did you know that meat dishes have a carbon footprint between 10 and 50 times greater than equivalent meat-free dishes? Selecting some plant-based meals can make a small impact on your footprint when dining out.
